How Polythene Bags are made:

At Durasak, every bag starts with high-quality polythene granules — usually LDPE or LLDPE. These are melted down and extruded through a circular die in a process called blown film extrusion, creating a continuous tube of polythene that’s inflated into a large bubble.

As the bubble rises, it’s cooled by air and then flattened into double-layer film between rollers. If custom branding is required, we use flexographic printing to apply logos, warnings or designs directly onto the film.

Next, the film is cut and heat-sealed into the right shape — customised to your specification whether that’s sacks, liners, tubing or grip seal bags. Each batch is checked for quality, then packed and shipped to businesses across the UK.

The Science Behind It

1. Origin: Crude Oil or Natural Gas
Polythene starts its life as ethylene gas, a byproduct obtained from crude oil or natural gas. Through a process called cracking, large hydrocarbon molecules are broken down into smaller ones—one of which is ethylene.

2. Polymerisation: Turning Gas into Plastic
The ethylene molecules are then subjected to polymerisation, where they’re chemically bonded into long chains to form polyethylene. This process transforms a simple gas into a versatile plastic resin.

3. Manufacturing: From Resin to Product
The polyethylene resin is cooled, cut into pellets, and transported to manufacturers. These pellets can be melted and formed into everything from plastic bags and films to containers, sheets, and wraps—depending on the type of polyethylene used.

Types of Polythene

LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene) – Flexible, soft, and used in things like carrier bags, shrink films, and liners.

HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) – Stronger and more rigid, ideal for containers, bottles, and piping.

LLDPE (Linear Low-Density Polyethylene) – Known for its toughness and stretchability, perfect for cling films and flexible packaging.
